Puntarenas, Costa Rica |
Description: The city of Puntarenas is the capital of Costa Rica's largest province - also named Puntarenas. The city is one of Costa Rica's largest ports for cruise ships, and has played a vital role in the culture and economy of the country. In the past, cargo ships utilized this safe harbor in the upper Nicoya Gulf, making it an important trade zone. These days, few cargo ships drop anchor here. Puntarenas only recently began promoting tourism, and is generally characterized by rusty and delapitated buildings that show a picture of what once was. Due to the city's convenient location, several luxury resorts have sprung up in recent years including the All Inclusive Hilton Doubletree Resort - Puntarenas. The construction of these hotels along with the areas recognition of the importance of tourism has resulted in an awaking and clean up of the area. |
