Tortuguero
Created in 1975, Tortuguero National Park was established to protect four endangered sea turtle species of the Caribbean Sea which came to nest annually between July and October. These species include the hawkbill, loggerhead, green and leatherback turtles. The Tortuguero (translates to Turtle Catcher) area is known for its beautiful channels, rivers, and lagoons which can be accessed by boat, canoe, or kayak. Though most tourists come to see nesting turtles, this area has a wealth of biodiversity including numerous endangered species such as manatees, spectacled caimans and 3 species of monkeys. The nesting season for green and hawkbill turtles is between July and October. Leatherback turtles nest from February through April. Though turtles only nest at these times of the year, individuals can be seen at any time.
