Alajuela 
Alajuela is Costa Rica’s second largest city and home to the largest airport in the the country, Juan Santamaria International Airport. It lies 20 km northwest of the capital, San Jose, in the Central Valley. A clean city with a friendly Tico population, Alajuela is a great place to visit. In the center of the city there is a church with a huge red dome, it is located just a few minutes away from the Central Park area. This beautiful park is a great meeting place for both locals and visitors to relax and mingle. Alajuela’s Central Market is close to the park and takes up an entire city block. Close to this, is another attraction you won’t want to miss, the Juan Santamaria Cultural Historical Museum. This museum is home to historical maps, artifacts and portraits from the battle of 1856. It is, however, what surrounds the city that is the most spectacular, the volcano’s of the Cordillera Central mountain range which include Poas Volcano.
Alajuela is conveniently located in the Central Valley. The GPS coordinates are approximately 10°01′N 84°13′W.
The weather in Alajuela is usually quite warm with average daytime temperatures in the low 80's. It is usually a little humid and the seasons run much like most of the rest of the country with the dry season running from December through April and the rain season from May through November.
Preparation is key for all you do during your visit; with this in mind pack accordingly, a raincoat, long and short pants, hiking shoes, sneakers. Don’t forget your camera, binoculars, and batteries.
Remember, if you plan to visit the Poas National Park, there is an entrance fee. This fee is usually reasonable, however, be prepared to seek the service of a guide, there is no better way to see the park, and all it has to offer.
