Caribbean Costa Rica
Welcome to one of the wildest regions Costa Rica has to offer. Here you will find amazing prehistoric forests, beautiful white sand beaches with a pounding surf and coconut trees along the beaches. This is one of the most beautiful geographic areas within the entire country. Inland there there are great rainforests that stretch up to the coastline. Visit the incredible canals of Tortuguero in the north and the provintial capital and the country's only Caribbean port of Limon. Head down the beautiful coastal highway and visit Cahuita National Park to see the coral reefs. Continue on to Puerto Viejo and see the amazing surfer break at Salsa Brava and the incredible beaches in Cocles and Punta Uva. From here, head to Manzanillo known world wide for its diving and extreme natural beauty.
Without a doubt one of the lushest regions in Costa Rica is Limon where tourists enjoy a wealth of activities including surfing, scubadiving, snorkeling, and world class sport fishing. High on your agenda for things to do should be a visit to Tortuguero National Park, which, among other things is famous for its turtle nesting. Another one you won't want to miss is the Cahuita National Park in Limon which is home to loads of wildlife and protected reefs. If you are an adventure traveler, you will love the Class III and IV rapids of the Rio Pacuare, zipping over the trees on a canopy tour or kayaking in the sea or in rainforest rivers. Water lovers will be amazed at the sea life as they snorkel through Cahuita’s barrier reef or go scuba diving in the gorgeous waters of the Gandoca Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge. If all this isn’t enough take a boat trip to see dolphins or a hike to see giant sea turtles nest on the beaches...
This region is set apart from the rest of the country by the towering Talamanca Mountain ranges and it runs for some125 miles between the boarders of Panama and Nicaragua.
This region of the country receives the highest amount of rainfall and, for the most part remains hot and humid all year long. Torential rains occur between May and August and between December and January. The wettest months are July and November, while it is mostly dry during August, September and October.
Remember packing the right essentials can only add to the enjoyment of your adventure; so do it right! Don’t forget the raingear, long and short pants, hiking boots, sneakers and maybe some sandals. Whatever you do don’t forget the camera, binoculars and of course batteries.
It has always been our advice that when visiting National Parks (or other areas of serious interest) seek the services of a guide. It will be worth every penny you pay. Although the Park fees do change, they are usually a bargain!
