La Fortuna and Arenal VolcanoLa Fortuna and Arenal Volcano

Arenal Volcano – Majestic! That is only one word conjured up to describe this most incredible and fascinating site. One of the most active volcanoes in the world, this natural wonder looms over the surrounding area and La Fortuna. Nearly every day the volcano rumbles throwing red hot lava down its sides and spewing huge ash plumes above its crater. It is, without a doubt, one of the world's most spectacular sites. In 1968, after nearly 400 years lying dormant, the volcano awakened with a huge eruption devastating the towns below it; on that fateful day approximately 87 people lost there lives and the volcano has remained active to date. These days, scientists consider the volcano safe as it is constantly releasing pressure with mini eruptions.

La Fortuna is the closest town to the volcano and is considered by many to be the "Adventure Capital of Central America". There is no shortage of activities and plenty of hotels, restaurants, shops etc. to fill your time. The population of La Fortuna is estimated at around 6,500 including tourists.
