San Gerardo de Dota
San Gerardo de Dota is located in the cloud forests of Southern Costa Rica and is home to some of the tallest mountains in Central America. It is well known for its spectacular views, wildlife sightings and coffee-producing communities. Bird watchers and photographers are in for a treat as this area is one of the few in the world that is home year round to the Resplenant Quetzal, Emerald Toucan and several species of Trogons.
The fresh mountain air and cooler temperature makes outdoor activity easy and there is so much to choose from. For an unforgettable experience, hike or horseback ride through the mountains or to a secluded jungle waterfall. Located in South Central Costa Rica, San Gerardo de Dota is located 20 km north of San Isidro de General, the second largest city in San Jose Province, Costa Rica. It is about approximately a 2 hour ride from San Jose and the airport. The GPS coordinates are approximately 9°33'02.02″N, 83°48'29.82″W.
Generally speaking, the dry season is from December – May, and the wet season the opposite, October being the rainiest month. The dry season is marked by uninterrupted days of warm, sunny weather, and the wet season has daily rainfall – usually in the afternoon, that can be very heavy.
As with all areas of Costa Rica, packing the right essentials is a key part to your experience. Among these a raincoat, long, as well as short pants, hiking shoes, sneakers, and sandals. Don’t forget your camera, binoculars, and batteries.
