The Montes de Oro Protected zone protects several tropical forests. The actual meaning of Montes de Oro is Gold Mountains. It is unclear whether this area earned it's name from the gold that can be found here, or from the golden color of the hills in the dry season.
The Penas Blancas Wildlife Refuge is totally within this protected zone. There are only a couple unpaved roads leading into the protected zone from Miramar, which is located near Puntarenas on the northern most section of the Gulf of Nicoya.
The weather in the Montes de Oro Protected zone can be summed up very simply - hot. Average daytime highs usually reach the lower to mid 90's, with little breeze.
Montes de Oro Protected Zone has no public facilities and consists of 4498 acres. The zone is located in the Guanacaste Province and was established in 1994. |
