Penas Blancas Wildlife refuge was established in 1985 to protect the tropical evergreen forest on the southern slopes of the Tilaran Mountain Range. The refuge also protects the wildlife in the watershed of the Ciruelas and Barranca rivers. It is entirely located within the Montes de Oro Protected Zone. Within Penas Blancas Wildlife Refuge you will see many mud and rock slides due to heavy and frequent rainfall.
Wildlife is scarce in Penas Blancas Wildlife refuge, but you can see many butterflies and birds, monkeys, raccoons, deer, and pacas.
Trees in Penas Blancas Wildlife Refuge include gumbo limbo, spiny cedar, Spanish cedar, and mayflower on the 5928 acres.
Penas Blancas Wildlife refuge is located in the Guanacaste Province and has no public facilities. |
