The Costa Rica Southern Caribbean coast contains stunning beaches and a reggae vibe. Cahuita and Cahuita National Park are long time favorites of eco-tourists while areas such as Punta Uva and Puerto Viejo are classic surfer destinations with a laid back vibe and entertaining nightlife. Indigenous villages can be explored from either of these Caribbean locations.

Created in 1975, Tortuguero National Park was established to protect four endangered sea turtle species of the Caribbean Sea which came to nest annually between July and October. These species include the hawkbill, loggerhead, green and leatherback turtles. The Tortuguero area is known for its beautiful channels, rivers, and lagoons which can be accessed by boat, canoe, or kayak.

The Location of Tortuguero and the Caribbean side of Costa Rica is the Eastern side of the country. Most travelers to Tortuguero take a boat ride through the Tortuguero Canals or fly in to Tortuguero Airport. Roads are fairly good to the Southern Caribbean coastal towns. Puerto Viejo is approximately a 4 1/2 hour drive from San Jose, 8 hours from Manuel Antonio, 8 hours from Monteverde, 6 hours from La Fortuna and 11 hours from Tamarindo. Please keep in mind that all drive times are approximate and depend on road conditions, as well as Costa Rica driving experience.

The Climate of Tortuguero & the South Caribbean side of Costa Rica is a relatively unpredictable and wet climate. The Costa Rica Caribbean receives it's highest precipitation during the month of July, and November through January. Temperatures average a high in the mid to upper 80's and a low in the 70's.
