Central Pacific Coast

Central Pacific Coast

Many Describe the Central Pacific coast of Costa Rica as being one of the most diverse beach areas in the country. The beauty of the area is accentuated by the Talamanca Mountain range to the east, the Gulf of Nicoya to the northwest, and the Pacific Ocean to the direst west.

Manuel Antonio is the most popular beach area along the Central Pacific coast. It is also the southern most point of the coast. The waters here are perfect for swimming on jungle lined beaches. This area is also home to Manuel Antonio National Park, which provides protection to a wide variety of endangered species including sloths and monkeys.

Jaco Beach is located an hour north of Manuel Antonio and 2 hours west of San Jose. This popular beach destination is a favorite for surfers and local Costa Rican citizens. Just south of Jaco Beach is Playa Hermosa, which is home to the Billabong Surf Championships in 2009.

Puntarenas is the northern most beach area along the Central Pacific coast. This is an old port town which was vital to the growth of Costa Rica in foreign trades and exports. These days, the port is primarily used by cruise ships. The Hilton Doubletree Resort is located here, providing an excellent All Inclusive option which is conveniently located to both Costa Rica International Airports.

The Location of the Central Pacific coast is along the western central portion of Costa Rica from Puntarenas down to Manuel Antonio. Manuel Antonio is approximately a 3 hour drive from San Jose, 3 1/2 hours from La Fortuna (Arenal Volcano), 3 1/2 - 4 hours from Monteverde, 3 1/2 - 4 hours from Liberia and 5 hours from Tamarindo. Please keep in mind that all drive times are approximate and depend on road conditions, as well as Costa Rica driving experience.

The Climate of the Central Pacific coastal area is on the warmer side. During the months of December through April, one can expect temperatures to reach a high in the low 90's and a low in the lower 70's with limited rainfall. During the months of May through November, one can expect temperatures to reach a high in the upper 80's and a low in the mid 70's with more prevalent rainfall.
