Costa Rica Northern Plains

Many describe the Northern Plains and Arenal Volcano area as being among Costa Rica's most beautiful destinations. This area is surrounded by scenic hillsides and volcanoes, including Arenal Volcano which is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. La Fortuna is the closest town to Arenal, which erupts every 5 to 10 minutes. Arenal Volcano came roaring back to life in 1968, killing over 80 local villagers.

Nuevo Arenal was established in the late 1960's early 70's as people from the old town of Arenal relocated after the village was destroyed by the big eruption. The beauty of this region is further accentuated by the scenic Lake Arenal and the dam, which provides electricty to most of Costa Rica.

The Sarapiqui region of Costa Rica is also located within the Northern Plains of Costa Rica. Sarapiqui is known for lush jungles, raging rivers and several adventure haciendas. This is a great destinations for those that want to explore Costa Rica in it's natural state.
