Grecia and Sarchi

Grecia and Sarchi are located in the Central Valley Highlands area of the country. The small town of Grecia is painting perfect, and is known to be one of the cleanest towns in Central America. This community is friendly and it’s people are mostly shop keepers and farmers. Although small, the town is important agriculturly. Large amounts of sugarcane is grown, as well as organic coffee and pineapples. Sarchi is a community full of artists and craftsman and is well known for their beautiful and unique ox carts that are one of the country’s national symbols. Most of the ox carts in Costa Rica are created here and later sold throughout the country, as well as to tourists. The carts are usually painted in bright colors and patterns. In the past, they were commonly used to carry coffee to the markets, near and far. Also, throughout the town are various shops that sell hand-crafted wooden furniture and souvenirs.

The combination of these two towns makes this a wonderful area to visit. Sarchi has several small communities. You may want to take a trip to Los Bajos del Toro just for the sites along the way. Although the road is kind of rough, it is worth the trip; on the way you will be able to see some of the most spectacular views in Costa Rica. Another thing you will want to see in Grecia is the famous and unique metal church, which is a deep dark red in color. The Cathedral de la Mercedes is a gothic style church made from metal pieces that were imported from Belgium in the 1890’s. While here you may want to stop at the Grecia Regional Museum, the insect and butterfly museum, which is home to over 50,000 different insects and butterflies, or the “World of Snakes” serpentarium, which houses more than 50 species of snakes from all over the world. Following this, you can tour the nearby waterfalls and make a day of it.

Lying northwest of the capital San Jose, Grecia and Sarchi are located in Costa Rica’s Central Valley, just a short drive from the International Airport. The oxe carts are roughly 10°05′N 84°21′W.

There are so many varied activities in this area it is difficult to pack. Some of the essentials are a raincout, long pants, hiking shoes, sneakers. Don’t forget your camera, binoculars, and batteries.

There is an incredible amount of things you can plan in the surrounding area; one thing to consider is visiting some of the numerous National Parks. If you decide to do so, whenever possible, seek the services of a tour guide, they are worth every penny you will pay.
