San Jose

San Jose is the capital of Costa Rica, located within the Central Valley. Founded in 1738, it was not named capital until 1823. It is the economic engine and major transportation hub of the entire country. The city still still shows a strong European influence, which is due to the coffee prosperity during the turn of the century. In other parts of the city you will still see reminders of the coffee plantations and farms.

If you are are looking for something to do, you won’t have to go far. In El Pueblo there is an assortment of more than 50 bars, clubs, and shops. Calle de la Amargura in San Pedro near the University of Costa Rica has a wide selection of bars, restaurants and discos. Both The National Theater and The Melico Salazar Theatre offer a variety of cultural activities, featuring acting and dance groups as well as orchestral musical presentations throughout the year. The downtown area is loaded with cafes and there are also many museums and other attractions offering alternative ways of exploring the city.

The climate of San Jose is considered to be one of the most comfortable in the world. The temperature ranges between 15 and 30 °C (59 and 86 °F). The rainy season is from May to late November, but cloudiness and rainfall can occur during the dry season. The weather can also be windy at times, which may decrease the apparent temperature even more. Relative humidity tends to range between 60% and 90%.

It goes without saying that the weather here can be unpredictable, pack accordingly, a rain coat, long sleeve and short sleeve pants, sneakers, and sandals. If you are going to venture out, you may want to bring your hiking boots. Don’t forget your camera, binoculars and batteries.
